Kanadehon Chūshingura

(賀名手本忠臣蔵)

Publisher: Edo-ya Matsugorō

1833

This series is based on a performance of the kabuki play Kanadehon Chūshingura in the Ichimura Theater in the 8th month of 1833.  In this series, “Kanadehon Chūshingura” is written as 賀名手本忠臣蔵, which differs from the usual 仮名手本忠臣蔵.  The series is not listed in Kuniyoshi by Basil William Robinson (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1961), and the prints are each about 14 by 10 inches (36 by 25 centimeters), a size known as ōban.  I am grateful to Lucienne Parkan for his contribution to this section.
