Modern Three Lucky Pairs

(Tôsei sampuku tsui, 當盛三幅対)

Publisher: Sano-ya Kihei

c. 1835

This series is listed as number 145 in Kuniyoshi by Basil William Robinson (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1961).  The series title may also be read as Tôsei sanpukutsuki (A Modern Trio of Women).  The prints are each about 14 by 10 inches (36 by 25 centimeters), a size known as ôban.  I am grateful to Robert Pryor for his contributions to this series.

The text (音曲はなし...) is an advertisement for rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of comedic storytelling, to be held in Yanagibashi (柳橋).

Yanagibashi (柳橋) is written on the towels

“Robinson” refers to listing of the series in Kuniyoshi by Basil William Robinson (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1961).
