This is a reproduction of the above triptych made by Watanabe.  The woodblocks were expertly reproduced, but a careful examination will reveal slight differences in the black outlines and text.

Robinson: 198

Title: Series of Proverbs (Tatoe-zukushi no uchi, たとえ尽の内)

Size: Ôban diptych (each sheet is about 14 by 10 inches or 36 by 25 centimeters)

Description: Cats illustrating various proverbs

Date: 4th month of 1852

Publisher: Kaga-ya Yasubei

NOTE: Robinson lists Tatoye-dzukushi no uchi as series 198.  Since only one of the three designs, of which I am aware, bears a title, it seems more accurate to consider this to be a triptych.

This is a modern reproduction.

I am grateful to Robert Pryor for these reproductions that lack Kuniyoshi’s signature.  They each bear the title Fifty-three Cats on the Tokaido (東海道五十三疋ねこづくし).

Title: Fashionable Cats Juggling Balls (流行猫の曲鞠 on left sheet and 流行猫の曲手まり on right sheet)

Date: c. 1841

Publisher: Kawaguchi-ya Uhei

I am grateful to Robert Pryor for this reduced size, c. 1850, reproduction of a Kuniyoshi print made by Utagawa Sadayoshi, an Osaka artist.  The fake signature is writen as 国芳画, using the modern shinjitai , rather than as 國芳画, the way Kuniyoshi would have written it.
