This is a reproduction of the above triptych made by
Watanabe. The woodblocks were expertly
reproduced, but a careful examination will reveal slight differences in the
black outlines and text. |

consider this to be a triptych. |
This is a modern reproduction. |
I am grateful to Robert Pryor for these reproductions
that lack Kuniyoshi’s signature. They
each bear the title Fifty-three Cats on the Tokaido (東海道五十三疋ねこづくし). |
Title:
Fashionable Cats Juggling Balls (流行猫の曲鞠 on left sheet
and 流行猫の曲手まり on right sheet) Date:
c. 1841 Publisher:
Kawaguchi-ya Uhei |
I am grateful to Robert Pryor for this reduced
size, c. 1850, reproduction of a Kuniyoshi print made by Utagawa Sadayoshi,
an Osaka artist. The fake signature is
writen as 国芳画, using the modern shinjitai 国, rather than as 國芳画, the way Kuniyoshi would have written it. |
