Flowers of Edo: Five Otokodate
(Edo no hana no gonin otoko, 江戸の花五人男)
Publishers: Shimizu-ya Tsunejirô and Isetsuru
1850
This series shows kabuki actors as Otokodate (男伊達). Otokodate, or street knights, were gallant and chivalrous commoners who protected ordinary people from the abuses of low-ranking samurai. This series is not listed in Kuniyoshi by Basil William Robinson (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1961). The prints are each about 14 by 10 inches (36 by 25 centimeters), a size known as ôban. |
