Index of Characters Portrayed in
Kuniyoshi’s Warrior Prints
Kuniyoshi
portrayed nearly 1,000 different characters in his warrior and historical
prints. The information below is
primarily drawn from Kuniyoshi: The
Warrior-Prints by Basil William Robinson (Cornell University Press,
Ithaca, NY, 1982) and its privately
published supplement. Additional
information about a particular single-sheet print may be found by following this link, and additional
information about a specific diptych or triptych may be found by following this link. Kuniyoshi occasionally altered the name of
a character on a print, and such altered names appear in parentheses after
the numerical designation of the print.
The subject of Japanese names is complex. In Kuniyoshi’s time, and until about 1900,
the family name preceded the given name.
However, some people are known by their given names, such as Napoleon
[Bonaparte], Galileo [di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de’
Galilei], and [Utagawa] Kuniyoshi. Although
many characters are listed under more than one name, please look under
different names and alternate spellings if unable to locate a particular
character. |
