Modern Comparison of Beauties
(Tôsei
bijin awase, 當世美人合)
Publisher: Kojima-ya

c. 1845
Some of the designs in this series are also used in the series Series of Modern Chrysanthemum Varities. This series is listed in Kuniyoshi by Basil William Robinson (1961, Victoria and Albert Museum, London) as number 154. Some of the prints are signed Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi ga (一勇斎 國芳 画), and some are signed Ippôsai Yoshifuji ga (一鵬斎芳藤画). The prints by Yoshifuji are lacking the poem, publisher’s seal, and censor’s seal, and are probably of a later date. The prints are each about 14 by 10 inches (36 by 25 centimeters), a size known as ôban. I am grateful to Robert Pryor for his contributions to this series. |
