Moral Guidelines for Good and Naughty Apprentices

(Kyôkun zenaku kozô zoroe, 教訓善悪小僧揃)

1857

This series is not listed in Kuniyoshi by Basil William Robinson (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1961).  The images are each about 7 by 10 inches (18 by 25 centimeters), a size known as chûban.  Two images were printed on a sheet of paper about 14 by 10 inches (36 by 25 centimeters), a size known as ôban.

This pair of prints, and all the prints below, are from a less labor-intensive edition, which almost invariably means a later printing.  In this edition, the delicate shading (bokashi) in the title cartouche was omitted.  Bokashi was achieved by hand-applying a gradation of ink to the wooden printing block rather than inking the block uniformly.  This hand-application had to be repeated for each sheet of paper that was printed.
