Untitled series of Chûshingura chûban
1849-1852
This
untitled series of prints illustrates characters in the kabuki play Kanadehon
Chûshingura. The series is not
listed in Kuniyoshi by Basil William Robinson (Victoria and Albert
Museum, London, 1961). The images are
each about 7 by 10 inches (18 by 25 centimeters), a size known as chûban. They each bear the seals of the censors
Hama and Magome, without a publisher’s seal.
I am grateful to Robert Pryor for his contributions to this series. |
